StockTrac Enterprise Networking Setup

The procedures outlined here assume that the Server and Workstations are already functioning properly in a Windows network.  Issues such as cabling, CAT-5 connections, printers and hubs should be referred to a hardware or networking technician for resolution prior to installing and configuring software.

In an Enterprise network, the server has the name of Server and each workstation is named using the convention Pc1, Pc2, Pc3, Pc4, etc. (folder names are not case-sensitive).  Check the networking properties on the server and workstations to make sure the names are correct.  You can use the default WORKGROUP as a workgroup.

The server will contain a directory off root named \stwin and under this directory are the workstation names, Pc1, Pc2, etc. as well as the Server directory, for running Enterprise on the server.  On the Server share the \stwin directory as STWIN and the Program Files folder as PROGRAM FILE. The \stwin directory will look similar to the following:

Configuration Files

The following configuration files reside in the \stwin directory:

  • sign001.ini (One for each shop number)
  • signcomn.ini (Common configuration information)

Each workstation directory, including \stwin\server, will contain the configuration file:

  • signwkst.ini (Workstation specific information)

Server and Workstation Registry Entries

The workstations, as well as the server, know where to look for Enterprise programs by looking in their respective registries.  As our example we will set up workstation one (Pc1) to run Enterprise.  Click on the Start and then the Run option from the desktop, then type in the program name regedit.exe (Registry Editor):

Then click Ok.  The initial registry screen will appear.

Click on the + to expand the entries for SOFTWARE section.  With the SOFTWARE icon highlighted, click Edit | New | Key.

You will be prompted to enter a new key name.  Type in StockTrac Enterprise and press Enter.

The new key Enterprise will be added.  With the StockTrac Enterprise key highlighted, click Edit | New | String Value.

You will be prompted to enter a new String Value for this key.  Type in ProgramPath and press Enter, then press Enter again to bring up the Edit dialog box.

The above example should represent how the network should be setup for Enterprise.  You may encounter, however, situations where the network has already been setup and the name of the server may be different.  If this is the case, type in the correct path to Enterprise, i.e., \\newserver\stwin\.  Click Ok to store this new string value in the registry.

Note: When making the registry entries on the Server user the String Values should be set to the local computer.

        • ProgramPath    = c:\stwin
        • UserName        = Server

Repeating the same process, add a new String Value for UserName.

Note that the UserName, Pc1, corresponds with the subdirectory under \stwin for this workstation, i.e., \stwin\Pc1.  If the registry entry on the workstation for UserName doesnt match the subdirectory name on the server, Enterprise will not be able to locate the configuration file for this workstation.

After the registry entries have been made on the workstation, create a shortcut to Enterprise on the desktop by right clicking on the desktop, select New | Shortcut and typing in the path and filename for j01.exe (Main Menu), or click Browse and find the program on the servers \stwin directory.  Give the shortcut a name of StockTrac Enterprise.

Enterprise Pathnames & Printers

Once you have Enterprise working on the workstation you need to visit StockTrac Configuration and define the pathnames and printers.  Select Configuration from the main menu, then the Workstation | File Folders & Integration option to display the dialog box.

When configuring the Server computer, you can click on the button at the end of the field and select the local directories you need.  Since the path button doesnt reference network connections, you will have to type the entire pathnames when configuring workstations.

The above example is typical of how an Enterprise network is configured.  Also, make sure that the \stwin folders on the server are shared so the workstations will have access to them.

Note:  The Real-Time Labor Guide resides on the workstation itself and is pathed to C:\RT as the Real-Time Labor Guide must be installed on each workstation.

Once the pathnames are correct, select the Workstation | Printers & Peripheral Devices option to display the printer dialog box.

Use the pull-down arrows at the end of each of the printer fields to select either a local printer, server printer, or printer attached to another workstation.

Note: All printers must be installed on the Server and workstations prior to selecting them otherwise they wont be available.
