II. How To Get To A DOS Prompt In Window95:

The following screen sample shows how to get to a MS-DOS prompt screen from within the Windows95 desktop screen. To return to a Windows95 Desktop screen from DOS, type EXIT from the DOS prompt.

Do’s and Don’ts:

Never turn off or reset a Windows95 computer without shutting it down properly. To shut down, click on the start button and select shutdown. Then select Yes to shut down the machine. Your screen should say "IT IS NOW SAFE TO TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER" before you actually may turn of the power to the machine.

Always make sure that the Server machine is powered on first, and comes up to the Windows desktop screen before powering up the other machines.

Always power down the Server machine LAST.

B. HARDWARE SETUP

Hardware Support:

This manual contains the instructions and software you will need to set up a basic Windows95 network. Any additional support from Janco regarding Windows95 network setup will be billable under Janco’s standard billable support call policy at an hourly rate of $60.00 ($15.00 minimum per occurrence).

II. Hardware Recommendations:

We recommend at least a Pentium 100mhz computer for the master computer (called the server). The server should have at least 16mb of RAM memory, a 1 gigabyte hard drive, and a mouse. We recommend that each additional workstation be at least a Pentium 75mhz computer with a minimum of 8mb of RAM memory, at least a 540mb hard drive, and a mouse. Each computer will need a networking card installed in it. We prefer the 3com Etherlink III network cards. We also recommend a battery backup unit be attached to the server in case of power outages. This gives you around 10 minutes to get your computer shut down properly so that you do not lose data. Also, a tape backup unit in your machine will help to insure that your data is backed up well. The backup unit should be able to back up 1400mb.

III. Standard Coax Network Cabling Setup Diagram:

If you are performing a "do it yourself" installation of the Windows95 network, we recommend an RJ58 coaxial cabling method for connecting your computers. Each computer is linked to the next using lengths of coaxial cable with BNC connectors attached to the ends of each length. Each length cannot exceed 300’. 2 terminators will be needed for your network connections, one for each "end" of the network. Additionally, each computer will need a ‘T’ connector that connects to each computers network card. Do not plug the cabling directly into the network card connector in your computer. The following diagrams shows proper connection for three computers.

C. SERVER SETUP

I. Set Role Of Machine To Network Server:

II. Set Up Server To Share Files And Printers:

III. Set Up Server I.D. and Logon Type:

We recommend entering the Computer Name as ‘SERVER’, the Workgroup as ‘STOCKTRAC’, and entering ‘StockTrac File & Print Server’ for the Description. Select ‘YES’ when prompted to reboot the machine.

IV. Set The Server’s Access Type:

You will then be prompted to enter some Windows95 disks. Follow the directions on your screen. When it is complete you will be prompted to reboot your machine. Select YES and reboot the machine.

V. StockTrac Sub-directories and Network files:

If StockTrac is not already installed on your machine, install it now following the instructions included with your StockTrac Program Disk Pack.

Setup the StockTrac sub-directories:

Go to a DOS prompt. Then go to the StockTrac directory by typing the following:

CD\ STCKTR50

Then press [Enter]. Next we will be adding a sub-directory for each machine in your

system. You will be naming the sub-directories the same as the machine names. The

server machine is named SERVER, and the workstations are named PC1, PC2, and

so on. Each machine name must be unique. To make the sub-directories type:

MD PC1

Then press [Enter]. Repeat for each machine, replacing PC1 with the proper

machine’s computer name (PC2, PC3, Server, etc.).

Copy network files to the hard drive:

Insert the disk labeled Windows95 Networking into your floppy drive. Then type:

COPY A:*.* C:\STCKTR50

Then press [Enter]. If your floppy drive is drive letter B, then replace A with B.

Copy Signon50.Cfg file to the SERVER sub-directory. Type the following:

COPY *.CFG C:\STCKTR50\SERVER

Then press [Enter].

You should now return to the Windows95 desktop by typing EXIT and pressing [Enter].

VI. Share StockTrac Directories:

Repeat steps 1-7 with the STCKTR50 directory, then double-click on the STCKTR50 folder and repeat steps 1-7 for each workstation’s sub-directory (PC1, PC2, etc.). You do not need to share the SERVER sub-directory.

C. WORKSTATION SETUP

Set The Workstation I.D And Network Logon:

For each workstation enter ‘PC’ then the workstation number (i.e. PC1, PC2, etc.) for the Computer Name. Enter ‘STOCKTRAC’ for the Workgroup, and ‘Stocktrac Workstation #’ for the description. Select ‘YES’ when prompted to reboot the machine.

II. Map Network Drives:

Repeat steps 1-4 for each drive that is to be mapped. The following list shows what path to type for each drive letter to map. You will be mapping drives F, G, and H.

DRIVE: PATH:
F: \\SERVER\STCKTR50
G: \\SERVER\PC1 (or the appropriate workstation name)
H: \\SERVER\CPA

After mapping each drive, a window will appear showing the contents for each drive. Close the window (by clicking the ‘X’ in the upper left corner) and continue with mapping until finished.

D. CREATE ICONS ON THE DESKTOP

Each computer will need a StockTrac User Icon, and a Reset User Icon. The StockTrac User Icon will run the StockTrac session. The Reset User Icon is used when the StockTrac session in use error cannot be cleared by closing any current sessions of StockTrac that may still be running.

Create The StockTrac Icon:

The following steps should be performed for each of the icons that need to be created.

For the StockTrac Icon select the Racecar icon. When finished the icon you selected should appear on the desktop screen.

Create The Reset User Icon:

Repeat steps 1-4 for creating the StockTrac icon, but replace the information entered in the fields as follows:

  COMMAND LINE NAME ICON
Server: C:\Stcktr50\Reset_Sv.Bat Reset Server User Bomb
Workstation: F:\Reset_Wk.Bat Reset Workstation Bomb

III. Set The Icons’ Properties:

For the Reset User Icon follow only steps 1-2, then click OK, then repeat steps 1-5 for the StockTrac User Icon.

Using The Reset User Icon:

The following ‘StockTrac Session In Use’ error message window appears when there is more than one session of StockTrac running on this machine, or when StockTrac was unable to shut down properly. Pressign any key will close this window.
